Notes:
The author of this book, Wolf Leslau, is one of the most well known scholars on Semitic languages. He learned Tigrinya and Amharic in Ethiopia and present day Eritrea, and has published several works on the two Afro-Semitic languages, in both English and French. This book is divided into two sections, the first part consisting of an extensive grammar of Tigrinya, and the second part consisting of narratives and lessons transcribed from recordings of native speakers of Tigrinya. One each page of this section, the original Tigrinya text appears along side the literal(mot à mot) French translation. And on the bottom of each page, the more natural French translation is included. The translated texts include descriptions of birth, death, marriage, and divorce rituals, and descriptions and profiles of major traditional social roles such as the judge (ዳንያ -- dania), clerics (ደብተራ -- debtera), and hired shepherds(ጓሳ -- gwasa).
