Notes:
As one legend has it, it was an Ethiopian shepherd who discovered coffee when he found that his sheep, which had been feeding on the leaves of cocoa plants, were a little jumpier than usual... Much has been written about the Eritrean and Ethiopian coffee ceremony (there's an excellent description in "Eritrea: A Country Handbook"), and it is one of the most distinguishing features of domestic life in the two countries. In fact, it is a crucial step in the process of entertaining guests. Coffee is always served first to the most senior members of a gathering, and it is generally only served to adults and young guests. Click the media icon to see a video clip of this ritual.
