"Kibrom and Wachil" is the tale of a young shepherd, Kibrom, and his clever and resourceful sister, Wachil. Kibrom is persecuted by his stepmother, and Wachil, who has the body of a dog, helps him to survive. According to the storyteller, who first heard this story as a child in Asmara, tales such as this were shared at spontaneous gatherings, and with anyone who was willing to listen -- adults or children. Someone who had never heard a story before would grow familiar with it by hearing it on many seperate occasions, until finally they would themselves be able to share it.
