Notes:
The author of this work, Alemseged Tesfai, was educated as a lawyer in the United States, and returned to Eritrea to serve as a leader in the education and cultural department of the EPLF during the Eritrean struggle for independence. He is also a distinguished playwright, and his play "The Other War", has been publish by Methuen, along with those of Wole Soyinka and others, in a volume entitled "Contemporary African Plays". A notable anecdote which appears in this book is the following: During the 1950s, when the UN was debating the future of the Eritrean people, some Eritrean leaders had united, across religious lines, to argue for Eritrean independence. They were alarmed by the possibility that Eritrea might be split up along ethnic lines. In order to demonstrate their commitment to work together, the leaders, including Weldeab Weldemariam, ate two dinners together. The first dinner was prepared and served in a Christian home. The second dinner was prepared and served in a Muslim home. This was significant because, according to Eritrean tradition, it is taboo for a Christian to eat meat prepared by a Muslim, and vice-versa. In defying this tradition, the group was expressing their common interest in Eritrean independence.
