Notes:
This Tigrinyan dictionary focuses on the political and theoretical words of modern usage. Each word is accompanied by its English and Arabic equivalent. It is very instructive to consider the largest entries in this dictionary. The largest entry -- at almost two pages -- is devoted to the definition of philosophy (ááˆáˆµáና). Other significant entries include "change" ( ለá‹á‰² -- lowty), liberalism (ሊበራáˆáŠá‰µ -- liberalinet), truth (ሓቂ -- haqy), metaphysics (መታáŠá‹šáŠ), state (መንáŒáˆµá‰² -- mengisty), dialectics (áˆáŒŽá‰µ -- megot), socialism (ማሕበáˆáŠá‰µ -- mahberinet), mode of production (ኣጋባብ ማእቶት -- agebab ma'itot), parliament (ባá‹á‰¶ -- bayto), monopoly (ብሕትá‹áŠ“ -- bihtiwina), consciousness (ንቅሓት -- nikhat), value (áŠá‰¥áˆª/áŠá‰¥áˆ¨ ጥቅሚ -- kibry/kibry tikmy), militarism (ወተሃደራá‹áŠá‰µ -- wetihaderawinet), individual (á‹áˆá‰€-ሰብ), necessary labour (ተደላዮ á…á‹® -- tedalayo iyo), democracy (ደሞáŠáˆ«áˆ²), peasant (ገባሠ-- gebar), money currency (ገንዘብ -- genzeb), slavery (ጊáˆá‹«áŠá‰µ -- gilyanet), contradiction (áŒáˆáŒá‰µ -- girchit), zionism (ጽዮንáŠá‰µ -- tsiyoninet), and politics (á–ለቲካ -- politics). Many of these words are native to the Tigrinya language, such as change (ለá‹á‰² -- lowty), and truth (ሃቂ -- haqy); others, such as the words for philosophy and democracy (ááˆáˆµáና -- philisiphina, and ደሞáŠáˆ«áˆ²) are old derivations from ancient Greek; and others, such as socialism (ማሕበáˆáŠ“ት -- mahberinet, and mode of production (አጋባብ ማእቶት -- agabab ma'itot), are native words which have been recently modified to express modern concepts. All three types of words, however, have been effectively integrated into the language.
