Notes:
A large amount of Shakespeare's plays have been translated into Tigrinya by Eritrean and Ethiopian scholars, including "The Merchant of Venice" and "Romeo and Juliet". In fact, characters such as Romeo and Juliet are quite well known to many Eritreans, some of whom may not speak English. Moreover, some of the royal, pastoral, and religious themes in Shakespeare's plays seem to resonate well with Eritrean culture, which is marked by centuries of feudal organization, and a Christian tradition which reaches back to the fourth century. What Shakespeare plays have been most popular among Eritrean readers and audiences? Has Shakespeare ever been performed in Tigrinya?
