This book is a biography of one of Eritrea's greatest historical figures -- Ras Woldemikael, a feudal lord who is also considered to be one of the first Eritrean nationalists. He was born in 1823, when Eritrea was occupied by the Ottoman Empire, and died in the 1890s, in the early years of the Italian occupation. Ras Wodekiel is a very popular figure in Eritrean oral culture, and his memory has been preserved in the century since his death, largely through informal storytelling.
