Notes:
When Eritrea was still a province of the Ethiopian empire, the new year would arrive at the beginning of September, which is also the harvest time. There is a common saying in Tigrinya: "In order to pass into the new year, you must pass through fire." This saying is embodied in a new year ritual where youths and adults would go out on New Year's Eve, carrying torches and going from house to house, singing songs.
